Five Questions-Dusty Corners
Dusty Corners are a french pop/electronic duo from France consisting of members Hoel and Simon, and at just 15 years of age they are making some great music. I caught up with them to ask Five Questions. Apologies for anything lost in translation.
Do you have a musical background?
Simon: Sure, Beatles was our first lullaby, it’s one of our common points. My parents are musicians, I therefore grew up with music. I started the conservatory at the age of 6 for playing the sax.
Hoel: We’ve always wanted to make music, but if our primary purpose was to rock, we started producing electronic music when we realized that rock was dead.
When did you first start producing music?
Simon: We evolve by crossing two roads and two different minds with two projects-electronic music and pop music. Until then, we produced only electronic music. Now, we’re more focused on pop music, it’s more lucrative. (Laughs)
Hoel: We started producing electronic music at the age of 14, and i think we’ve got two differents culture of music : I’m more in a “British musical tradition” i’ve always listened to sounds coming from the UK. Simon is an Italian guy so he’s more influenced by the 80’s, logic isn’t it? Anyway, it’s a good mix.
How has your sound developed since then?
Hoel: At the beginning our composition was more focused on distorted and satured sounds, because we were only asshole teenagers without respect for our parents. We were influenced by the Chaos : Frank Zappa, Ornette Coleman,King Crimson, Scelsi…
Now our sound is influenced by artists such as : Joy Orbison, Burial,James Blake, T.E.E.D,Purity Ring, Bambounou, Pariah, Julio Bashmore,A$AP Rocky, etc.
What really inspires you?
Simon: Everything, what I see, what I dream. I also think that unconsciously, I’m inspired by the desire to seduce, with my music, some beautiful girls, it’s a productive phantasm!
Hoel: My mum and my girlfriend.
Finally, what kind of equipment/software do you use to create your sound?
Hoel: Only Ableton, but our sounds and instruments are made from everything: Samples from old tunes, The claps by our real hands, some old cheap synth… It’s a real and true philosphy of the sound. The processing of montage is made on Ableton.
Simon: I’m Collecting all the noise i can find with my Zoom H2, then i produce my tunes, this is how i conceive my music-Our music-to put life in music.
